Dear Ms Alvarado
I am writing in support of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, an organisation representing lawyers in the United Kingdom which takes a special interest in the human rights situation in Colombia. Two members of the organisation recently travelled to Colombia as part of the Caravana de Juristas which saw 70 lawyers and judges from 12 countries visit the country. Several members of the delegation had a special interest in the case of the Sociology lecturer Liliany Obando and visited her at her home whilst they were in Colombia.
I am writing today regarding Ms Obando’s case and specifically to request information regarding the petition for conditional release. She is a sociology lecturer from the National University and a human rights activist and we believe that she was accused of “rebellion” and arrested in August 2008 as a way of silencing her criticism of the current political and economic situation in Colombia. Aside from the motivations behind her arrest, we are extremely concerned that throughout her process there have been constant breaches of due process which have seen her imprisoned for over three years without a conviction and more recently, on 5 August 2014, she was imprisoned once more in spite of the fact she had already been sentenced to house arrest. We were informed that as a result of your actions Ms Obando was returned home after one week of imprisonment and we are grateful for your efforts. We know both in our own country and in terms of our international work that it is as a result of state officials like you taking a stand that the rule of law and democracy become strengthened in any society.
As a result of her work internationally Ms. Obando has considerable support in the UK as well as in Europe and Australia and I ask for you to continue to ensure that due process is respected and all of her legal rights fully upheld. It is in this context that I would like to request information on the status of the request for conditional release.
I will continue to follow the case closely along with the wider international support network and hope to maintain contact with you regarding any developments in the case.
Thank you very much for your time.
