President Jacob Zuma
Dear President Zuma,
I am writing in relation to the murder of Thuli Ndlovu, who was murdered in September 2014 because she was a defender of housing and land rights in KwaZulu Natal
Ms Ndlovu was gunned down in her home while her daughter studied in another room. This was a politically motivated murder against a housing rights activist: her death comes in the context of numerous death threats the killing of other activists and campaigners (including Thembinkosi Qumbelo, Nkululeko Gwala and Nqobile Nzuzua in 2013).
Ms Ndlovu was an active member of the shack-dwellers’ movement, campaigning for decent homes and land rights for marginalised people. She was a human rights defender who has been silenced by politically motivate violence.
I call on you to ensure that Ms Ndlovu’s murder – and other deaths and violence against human rights defenders – are investigated swiftly and thoroughly, and that those responsible are brought to justice. I further call on you to ensure that housing rights defenders can campaign for decent conditions without facing violence.
Too many people in South Africa are deprived of land rights and live in appalling conditions, and given your government’s to address this situation you have a particularly strong duty to protect those grassroots activists who lead the struggle for access to land and homes.
I will continue to follow the case closely along with the wider international support network and hope to maintain contact with you regarding any developments in the case.
Protest the murder of human rights defender and housing activist Thuli Ndlovu - South Africa.
