Call for support - Philippines.

Outlined below is an appeal that we have received from our comrades in the Karapatan organisation in the Philippines. The appeal outlines the protests they will be organising over the next few weeks against the ongoing assault of the state against indigenous peoples. Appeal for support

As the International Human Rights Day on December 10 approaches, Karapatan and its network of people’s organizations, human rights defenders and peace advocates are mounting several activities and actions nationwide to highlight the continuing human rights abuses under the administration of Phil. Pres. Benigno Aquino III as a result of intensified military operations through the government’s counter-insurgency program Oplan Bayanihan.

Karapatan has documented 222 cases of extrajudicial killing, 23 enforced disappearances, 221 frustrated killings, 105 victims of torture, and more than 40,000 individuals who forcibly evacuated due to military operations.

These are occurring amid the backdrop of unhampered plunder of lands and resources by large-scale and destructive mining and agro-plantations by foreign and local big business, landlessness and landgrabbing, joblessness, forced evictions of urban poor dwellers, criminal neglect of typhoon survivors, increased US military intervention and presence, and corruption by those in power.

In the nation’s capital, we are hosting more than 300 peasants, indigenous peoples and advocates from Mindanao, as the 3-week People’s Camp-out dubbed as Manilakbayan ng Mindanao 2014 (People’s Journey for Food and Peace in Mindanao) hopes to bring to fore the continuing killing of indigenous peoples, environmental/anti-mining activists and peasants; criminalization of the work of human rights defenders and filing of trumped up charges against them; sexual abuse on women and the pervading climate of impunity and unpeace in the communities because of intensifying military operations that result to attacks against schools, forced evacuation, and deprivation of social services. The concept paper on the Manilakbayan is attached.

We are enjoining our fellow activists and rights defenders in different parts of the world to support the People’s Camp-out and the activities leading to December 10 by:

  • issuing statements of support and solidarity for the peasants and indigenous peoples in the People’s Camp-out and for the International Human Rights Day, which can be sent to karapatan@karapatan.org;
  • conducting discussion groups, fora, and other means to propagate the issues;
  • providing support for water, food and other needs of the peasants and indigenous peoples in the camp-out through Karapatan’s paypal account which can be accessed through karapatan.admin@gmail.com or through http://karapatan.org/support-karapatan-human-rights-work;

sending letters of concern to:
